FLORA AND FAUNA IN CIUDAD BLANCA
Thanks to its geographical location, Ciudad Blanca provides a suitable habitat for both flora and fauna of special, varied and endangered species, which has moved the Honduran government, secretariats, international organizations and especially the Kaha Kamasa Foundation in promoting, protecting and ensuring the protection of not only the archaeological site but also of all species of flora and fauna in the area.
The Jaguar is the largest predator in the jungle area and is the third largest species of feline in the world, it inhabits the Biosphere Reserve of the Rio Platano.
His scientific name is Panthera Onca, he is the only representative of the Panthera genre. This cat is a solitary hunter who takes advantage of large and small dams of water and land.
The main threat of the Jaguar is hunting for its fur trade and deforestation.
For its conservation status, it is in the “NT” category of IUCN as a species that is “close to the threat”, and regulated in Appendix I of CITES.
Danto or Tapir
The Danto or Tapir is the largest land mammal in the national territory, this species inhabits the Biosphere of the Rio Platano.
Its scientific name is Tapirus Bairdii, it is within the Tapiridae family, it is of solitary habit, they feed on foliage and seeds of a great variety of plants making it an excellent seed disperser.
Deforestation together with hunting and grazing of cattle, directly affect Danto causing a decrease in its population, so IUCN reclassified it in the category “EN” as a species in “danger of extinction”, and is regulated within the Appendix I of CITES.
The Fer de Lance is a resident species within the national territory commonly found in wet and rainy forests, this species inhabits the Biosphere of the Rio Platano.
Its scientific name is Bothrops asper is within the family Viperidae is the most dangerous representative of Central America for being territorial and aggressive.
He has diurnal and nocturnal habits, his poison is highly dangerous is hemorrhagic, necrotic and hemolytic. Small offspring possess the most potent poison due to the amount of their predators.
Horse bear, Hormiguero or Gigante Hormiguero, is a mammal that is found within the national territory, remains in tropical or dry forest areas, inhabits the Biosphere Reserve of the Rio Platano.
Its scientific name is Myrmecophaga Tridactyla is found within the family Myrmecophagidae, it is considered as the largest of all species of anteaters, its main source of food are insects, such as ants or termites.
Among its main threats include habitat loss, fire, hunting, use of its skin and capture for medicinal uses, which is why it falls under the category “VU” as a Vulnerable species for IUCN and is regulated by Appendix II of CITES.
The Green Guara is a resident species of the Honduran territory, specifically inhabiting the Biosphere Reserve of the Rio Platano.
Its scientific name is Ara Ambiguus is within the Psittacidae family, they are characterized by being very shy and difficult to see, and are usually found at heights not less than 35 meters in the treetops. Its main threats are deforestation, capture by illegal trade, hunting, increased banana plantations and livestock, this species is in the category “EN” as a species in “danger of extinction” for the classification of IUCN, and is regulated by Appendix I and II of CITES.
